Megan - Bar Tender
Frankenstein's
I really wanted to gain experience in a busy bar in town, my friend worked at Frankenstein’s so I had met a number of the staff through him so I knew the staff were all really friendly, that was the main thing that attracted me to Frankenstein’s.
A friend recommended me for the job working as a Bar Tender during the Fringe, they were short of staff so I started straight away, I was really thrown in at the deep end working a night shift on a busy karaoke Sunday mid-Fringe without much prior bar experience. I was so overwhelmed at how supportive and helpful every member of staff was. After that I continued to enjoy working some day and night shifts throughout the Fringe, I became really close with everyone there and decided to keep my job into term time at uni. I have worked at Frankenstein's for almost a year now, it’s not a place that you could ever get bored of.
Usually I get started by setting up the bar and waiting station and make sure that everything is prepared. I serve food and drink to customers throughout the day. At the end of shift the waiting station and bar needed to be packed down and cleaned.
I really love working in such a big team, everyone gets on really well, each shift is always really fun. I also really appreciate how flexible the job is, in Frankenstein's there are so many members of staff it makes it fairly easy to pick up or drop shifts when need be.
The most important quality that will lead to success within the company is the ability to work hard. Working hard on shift means that you get the most out of every shift and will also encourage those around you to work hard. If you can prove you are a hard worker you will be given more and more responsibilities within the workplace.
Working for Glendola opens the door to a number of different training opportunities internally but also externally as well. When I first started I had to complete a 13 week training plan allowing you to become familiar with working behind the bar. There are also a number of external training opportunities, I recently completed a one day first aid course and a short alcohol training course given by Diageo.
I love working at Frankenstein's, it is really hard work sometimes but it is a very rewarding job if you work hard. Everyone is considered a valued member of the team.
The opportunity to move through the ranks of the business and the fact that you can transfer between the venues make Glendola a unique employer. It allows you to build on your experience working within bars but it also offers a potential career path.
It’s absolutely worth applying and getting involved, you will meet so many new friends and great people, you will learn new useful new skills.
